Whitby Steampunk Weekend July 2024
At the end of July I decided to visit Whitby again, this time for the Steampunk Weekend. I often decide to visit such weekends one or two weekends before by which time accommodation in Whitby is very expensive. As such I ended up staying in Scarborough which has better prices and is only 30 minutes drive from Whitby.

After numerous trips to both the Steampunk and Goth weekends in Whitby I’ve noticed some distinct differences from a street photography perspective. Many of my favourite places to take street portraits are close to the bottom of the 199 steps leading down from the church. The streets around here offer some interesting backdrops and there are lots of alleyways where you can pose people where you won’t have other tourists in the background. The narrow streets also mean that even when the sun is shining there is a good chance that one side of the street will be in the shade where lighting is more even on the face. During the Goth weekends you will have lots of people walking this area of town. During the Steampunk weekends however it can be fairly quiet. On Steampunk weekends most of those in costumes seem to spend all their time either inside Whitby Pavilion or on North Terrace between the Pavilion and the Whalebone Arch. In my experience the lighting in this area is never as good as what you find in the narrow streets down in the town.

Whitby Steampunk Weekend Conclusion
Having visited the Whitby Steampunk Weekend a couple of times now I’ve noticed that the number of images I come home with seems to be less than my visits to the Whitby Goth Weekends. I also seem to get more images when I attend other Steampunk weekends and some of these other weekends are closer to home which means I don’t have to book accommodation.
